Treatment of CSO

 

HydroSeparator® CSO is a patented and specialized system to effectively clean Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) and minimize the environmental impact of recipients such as rivers, harbours and beaches etc.

The treatment system
The treatment system is based on several integrated cleaning solutions. As the first cleaning step the CSO passes a mechanical CSO screen to remove debris and particles >4-5 mm.

The next step is to retain the first and most dirty part of the CSO (first flush) in a retention tank. After that the CSO will first pass lamellas to settle all big particles and hereafter removing smaller particles using a mesh filter.

After a long rainfall the CSO is relatively clean and for these situations a bypass function can be integrated, to avoid overflow of the HydroSeparator®. After the CSO situation is stopped the retentiontank is emptied and the dirty water is pumped to the sewer system. At the same time, the lamellas and the filters are automatically sprayed and flushed with some of the treated water retained during the treatment process. The HydroSeparator® is now cleaned and ready to effectively treat the next CSO situation – and most importantly the sludge is automatically pumped to the sewer system off peak time.

Example
If the HydroSeparator® is dimensioned for 5 – 10 l/s/ha a bypass of the HydroSeparator® will only take place 1 – 2 times a year. This is equivalent to 10-15% of the annual precipitation, and will occur in situations with heavy rain. In these situations the first and most dirty part of the CSO is always cleaned and therefore it is only the relatively clean part of the CSO that is let out – minimizing the environmental impact.

Efficiency
Test has shown a cleaning efficiency of 70 – 80 % for suspended solids (SS) and a number of hazardous substanses. The outlet values for SS are about 20-30 mg/l.

Capacity
The capacity of the standard systems varies between 5 l/s and >1000 l/s. With bypass integration the total capacity of a standard system is up to 4.000 l/s. Larger systems can be customized for bigger volumes water. The HydroSeparator® is delivered as a complete solution including control system that can connect to existing SRO systems as well as a service and maintenance agreement is offered.
